As Eric Kandel said: “In art, as in science, reductionism does not trivialize our perception, of color, light, and perspective, but allows us to see each of these components in a new way”, any complex systems can be decomposed as individual constituents and interpreted by their interactions. When we explore each component mechanistically, there is always an insightful implication to aid us in understanding how they organize, function, and change as a whole. Of all intricate systems found in the universe, the brain is the most complicated yet sophisticated biological organ enabling us to perceive the outside world, contrive emotions, thoughts, memory, and express them by means of motor actions. Similar to the Milky Way where millions of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter constitute the system, the brain is composed of a distinct repertoire of structural and functional units. In order to understand the nature of the entire system, it is imperative, though, to tease part individual compartments and interrogate their interactions thoroughly. Although our understanding of information processing in the brain is still limited, with emerging technical advances, we are beginning to unveil the mystery.
