About Holdingthebaby

Despite being natural, breastfeeding can be really difficult - and that’s OK! My philosophy is to help new mums trust their instincts in order to build a relationship with their baby that is based on flexibility, responsiveness and acceptance. I provide you with the necessary skills, as well the emotional support that you need to develop a strong and natural breastfeeding relationship with your baby.

My wife was having trouble with breast feeding and nipple pain. After being told that this was 'normal' by our midwife at the hospital, we decided to get some advice from a lactation specialist. I'm happy to say that Karen helped my wife immensely and greatly improved her breast feeding experience. Thanks Karen!

When I had my daughter, I was desperate to breastfeed but didn't have the support in place, and so only managed a painful 3 weeks. For our second child, we were adement to give it another try, I contacted Karen on the recommendation of 3 of my bump and baby mums and haven't looked back. Karen was fantastic. There were complications after birth and had it not been for Karen we would have absolutely gone down the formula route in the hospital. She listened to us, knew what we wanted and quelled our anxieties in a firm but loving way. She was realistic about it being a tough journey but gave us the answers and tools we needed to see it through. Karen responded to messages very quickly and soon got the nickname cheerleader as that is exactly what she is; genuinely passionate about your breastfeeding success. I'm very pleased to say that we're now 4 months in and breastfeeding is such an easy pleasure.

Karen provided invaluable support when I had my first baby so I knew who to call when I unfortunately had some challenges second time round. Karen is so lovely and provided great advice, taking account of what I really needed at that time, as well as baby. Would highly recommend!

Karen’s support has been incredible and I’ve absolutely loved my breastfeeding journey so far. I booked her in before I’d even given birth. Although there are brilliant free resources in my local area, I knew I wouldn’t want to leave the house in those early days to seek them out, and had been told that the midwife advice in the hospital can be hit & miss as they are under so much strain. Having Karen come and see me in my home, with my baby, and give me specific and tailored help was completely invaluable and has had a huge impact not just on my breastfeeding but on my mothering too. She arrived first thing the day after I’d been discharged from hospital, but could have come and helped on the ward too if I’d needed to stay in longer. She checks in regularly with text messages too which is encouraging and confidence boosting, and she’s full of handy tips and knowledge. For anyone unsure if they’re going to need help, I’d say just go for it. Don’t wait for things to get bad to call in the pro, preempt it, book Karen in, and you and your baby will have a much happier time!

I struggled to bf my first born due to a myriad of factors ie prem, tongue tie, jaundice etc and ended up moving to expressing/bottles fully by week 5/6 which worked for us but I wanted to give it another shot for our second with support lined up to navigate any challenges to give us the best shot at getting bf established in those first few weeks. I felt like last time I was scrambling for help vs having it ready. Karen was recommended from a midwife who did our first prenatal so I prebooked three sessions and got to chat to Karen before the delivery to get a game plan together. Our second thankfully term, with no severe tongue tie and she latched better initially but we had a battle with jaundice again including readmission into nicu on day 5 for treatment where I couldn’t bf her for 16 hours so having Karen on the line to message constantly for tips/help/advice to navigate was invaluable as well as the practical sessions post birth where she helped with improved latching and positioning as well as sharing helpful articles and links as needed. Definitely recommend for anyone looking to line up support regardless if a first or for subsequent babies.

Karen is incredible at what she does and I would highly recommend her services to anyone who wants a successful breastfeeding experience. When I needed support Karen was able to visit me quickly and gave me the encouragement and confidence that I needed to continue breastfeeding. She showed and supported me with different positions and helped me and my baby find what worked for us. She is so communicative and genuinely cares about helping you. If I ever have any questions she always responds quickly and is so reassuring. I never knew breastfeeding would be so challenging and I would not be where I am now without Karen’s support. Thank you Karen!!

I cannot recommend Karen highly enough. When I had my son I had no idea of the challenges that breastfeeding could present. Karen guided us through the first six weeks with compassion, patience and expertise - she has a wonderful ability to cut through all the noise, stress and conflicting advice out there with calmness and simplicity. Her approach is exactly what new mums need. Thank you for all the kind words and encouragement (and WhatsApp messages!), I wouldn't be breastfeeding now if it wasn't for you xx

After a tricky birth and rocky first few weeks Karen was amazing at getting us on the right path with breastfeeding. 6 months later, my daughter is still exclusively breast fed and is in the 90th centile for weight and height. I’m not sure I would have made it through those first few weeks without her support, kind words and encouragement.

After our first baby was born we were struggling with breastfeeding and trying formula, guards and more. Karen came and within 10 minutes both baby and mum had mastered it. We can’t recommend Karen highly enough!

I recently had my first baby and after quite a traumatic birth he was taken to the NICU because he swallowed meconium and needed help from a ventilator to breathe. Luckily he wasn’t on the ventilator for long but he stayed in the nicu ward for around 48 hours. My preference has always been to exclusively breastfeed, I was allowed to breastfeed in the nicu however being new to this I didn’t really understand or receive the support I needed to get this established and was rushed to fit within their feeding schedules. he was given ‘top up’ formula which I agreed to not really understanding what it meant. I continued to go to him every 3 hours and breastfeed what I could. When he came back to me on the ward my milk still hadn’t come in and I struggled to keep up with the amount of formula he was having which was really hard for me, it broke my heart every time he had a bottle. He also had higher levels of jaundice so we were encouraged to keep topping up to flush it out. When we were discharged I got in touch with Karen right away through a recommendation at my ‘Happy Parents, Happy Baby’ course and I’m SO glad that I did. Karen helped me to make sense of the situation, that everything was fine and we would be able to get him back to exclusively breast feeding. With her support I managed to do this within 3 days of him coming out of hospital and we are now exclusively breastfeeding. A lot of my experience was my anxiety around the situation, Karen was a calming influence and reassured me throughout - checking in with us regularly, offering advice and always being available on WhatsApp for any questions that I had. I highly recommend Karen for anyone who is breastfeeding - from my experience so far it’s a very challenging but so rewarding and worth getting the support to get it right for you and your baby early on. Thank you!!!

I'm so grateful to Karen for the huge part she played in helping me establish breastfeeding. We had a really rocky start and I was massively lacking in confidence. Over the course of a few visits, Karen gave me lots of practical guidance on latch, positioning and on seeking further support with potential tongue tie. But more than that, her encouragement helped me keep going when things were tough, and have faith in myself (and my baby) that we could make it work. I'm so glad that I listened to her and persevered and am now happily breastfeeding 10 weeks on - thank you Karen!

Karen was so kind and helpful. She helped me with various ways to hold my baby. I had been doing these holds wrong and it had caused mastitis and sore nipples. Our baby was not opening his mouth wide due to his ventouse delivery and Karen told us about the benefits of craniosacral therapy. She has a lot of knowledge and answered our flurry of questions. I would fully recommend Karen.

Karen saw us when I was struggling with milk supply and feeding an increasingly aggravated baby! In one session she turned things around and we have a happy breastfed baby. Was able to see us quickly, super helpful and very responsive to follow up questions! Cannot recommend highly enough!

I called Karen because I wanted somebody to come and help me in person with breastfeeding and check how I was doing. Karen replied pretty much straight away and agreed to see me the next day. I was really happy with the service Karen provided as she showed me other ways to feed baby and also reassured me that I was doing well, which I really needed. Karen also gave me advice on a number of other matters such as potty training my toddler as well as how to deal with my baby’s reflux. I really felt glad that I called Karen and will be recommending her to any new mums I come across. I was also offered a 20 minute follow up visit which was much appreciated and will definitely be calling again if I need any more support. Thank you!

I got in touch with Karen late on day 2 after returning home from hospital having failed to get breastfeeding started. I was expressing colostrum and feeding it to my baby with a cup or syringe and panicking that she was not getting enough. Karen came round the next morning first thing, and gave me advice and encouragement, helping me to relax and trust that we just needed to practice and build our confidence. She also taught us tips for sleeping, and using a sling. I felt so much better after her visit, and managed to make great progress over the next few days with a calmer attitude. We are now successfully breastfeeding and it has been such an enormous weight off my mind. Thank you!

I had a session with Karen today and it was extremely helpful. Karen has helped me find a way to breastfeed my baby in a more comfortable way, gave lots of useful information regarding optimising my milk supply and sleep while breastfeeding as well as provide some well needed reassurance. The early days of breastfeeding can be tricky and I’d definitely recommend a session with Karen if you need some support at this time.
