We spent an ungodly amount of money on an expensive accountant here in London who took about 6 months to get our taxes for 2016 - 2019 sorted. The tax bill he calculated for us seemed awfully high, so we turned our records over to Trevor at Greenbacks, who needed less than a minute to find more than $10,000 in errors made by his predecessor. In the months since filing our amended returns, Trevor has been exceedingly patient and helpful in dealing with the dunning by the IRS, as they failed to catch up with the pandemic backlog.

While I expect any competent accountant go know where to fill in the numbers and file a return, it is only the exceptional accountants (and the ones worth the most) who take the time to understand your situation and devise one or more strategies in order to lower your tax liability for you to pay the least you are legally required to pay.
