Canada | 10 June 2023Let me say, since 2017 when my wife engaged TFX for compliance (amnesty) they have been amazing. Every year doing a great Job. This changed this year: and hence my 2* review (which has now changed back to 5*) My wife recieved a small honorarium for speaking to a not for profit.... she's not an employee or an agent of this entity. after filling in the excellent questionnaire. the news came back that another form had to be filled, So instead of $350 like it had been for years. The base fee for taxes is $500 (no explanation as to why) AND the one extra form will be a $300 fee. The upside is to expect a larger return. We explored the form, and had some questions and concerns about why this form is needed, it didn't seem to line up. She emailed back on a tuesday to get clarification. After no response on friday, she called in to TFX and was informed that in order to get clarification she would be billed at the hourly rate for extra work simply to get clarification. Let me be clear. This is quite the change from the excellent service that has been put out to us in years past.... we have recommended many fellow expats on their services. This is most disappointing this year. we're still in the thick of it, and are still hopefully for an expedient solution or clarification. But that remains to be seen. I will update the review accordingly. UPDATE: It appears that my wifes case was reviewed by a higher up, and the extra forms are not required, this is actaully why I'd prefer to use a preparer as it's on them to interpret the often confusing and nuanced law surrounding expat taxes... They heard our concerns and took the extra information we provided and adjusted accordingly. We have had the same preparer for several years, which is great. While there is still some communication struggles as it's not a phone calling situation, our suggestions is don't be afraid to ask questions and push back if you think something is not right or you are confused, it's their job to explain the 'why' behind what they are doing. In this case they were happy to Adjust, however I would have been happy to recieve the 'why' behind the extra filing needs. This situation also points to the fact that they are not trying to upsell us and force us into filing things that don't need filing. That is comforting In regards to the extended base fee this year. In previous years our return has been very simple, however this year there was some self employment income, meaning that our fee has gone up to a more premium tier, We did have to seek out this information ourselves (it's right on their fees page). We did not receive an explanation of the fee going up at the front end. I'm sure if we had asked about this in particular, they would have explained. I'm happy to change my review from 2 star back to five now it's been resolved. TFX continues to provide great service. You won't regret it. Rewind back 7 years to get into streamlined compliance they were fantastic!

Brazil | 05 June 2023They did NOT make the service - an extension of taxes, and after ignoring my communications, and my credit card communication, sent simply a payment confirmation as "proof" they did something. Such scammers.

Spain | 26 May 2023I have been using TFX for several years and have been very satisfied. This year I found many great improvements to their already easy-to-use Tax Questionnaire. And I was astonished that I got my return in a week after I submitted my information, even though I sent it in later than usual. Any questions I have are answered quickly and professionally. With confidence, I highly recommend TFX.

Spain | 23 May 2023Overall, the team is professional, swift, and helpful with handling your tax filing needs. Their tax submission software is user-friendly, although it could be little bit more intuitive, but the staff is there to answer any questions you may have. One of the minor complaints I have is the limited discounts for returning members.

Austria | 20 May 2023TFX saved the day for me again this year! As usual, they were competent, quick, responsive, and honest. It is so very easy dealing with them, as they answer emails asap, make queries on anything I've missed, and in general, make me feel all around that I am in very competent hands. I use to absolutely dread tax statement time, but I have learned that TFX does such a magnificent job, that I can truly relax about my taxes and deadlines.

United Kingdom | 15 May 2023I honestly don't know what I'd do without Taxes for Expats. They've helped through my complicated tax situation for several years now. They always answer questions, and accounts will discuss with each other if need be. The accountant who did my return for 2021 was especially helpful and thorough--the best yet. I hope to have him again.

Netherlands | 13 May 2023Taxes for Expats did a decent job the first two years I used them, but this year my experience with them was absolutely horrible. I will never use them again. I feel that I was misled so they could overcharge me for services I did not need. I also received advice from their accountant which was dubious and, when I finally turned to another company, turned out to be false. In short, this year they advised me to file a form - form 8858 - that costs an extra $300. If you are a freelancer (in the U.S. I'd get a 1099 for my work) - or in fact did any freelance work on the side, regardless how little you earned - their policy seems to be to insist you file it, which is a great way for them to bloat your bill. I received a series of long, drawn-out responses to my skepticism, trying to get me to agree. For example (and this is just a small part of their explanations): "Failure to file 8858 may include penalties in the form of monetary fines or a reduction of the taxpayer's foreign tax credit. The burdens placed by IRS on taxpayers living abroad are unfortunate, and they always seem to become more complicated rather than less. However, our goal is compliance with U.S. law..." Here's the thing: as I eventually found out, there is no penalty for individuals whose income is excluded. If your income is excluded (as is the case with me and probably many expats), the penalty is toothless. That is, there is no penalty for not filing the form! They know this obviously, but they went through great pains to get me to agree to it anyway. Nor did Taxes for Expats deny it when I confronted them with this fact. They responded that the text was "literally" true. Perhaps it is, but since there is no penalty, it's not in my interest to file. It is, however, in their interest to charge for it. Back to the original negotiations: eventually, they wanted me to sign a waiver, as if they needed some kind of legal shield should I refuse to go along with the form. So I decided that they were the professionals and agreed. As my suspicions grew, however, I eventually turned to another tax firm for a second opinion, and I'm glad I did. That's how I found out form 8858 is entirely unnecessary. I was angry and felt deliberately misled. I imagine many other clients of Taxes of Expats have unknowingly gone along with filing this form, which is too bad. Because once you file it, you're probably stuck having to file it every year in the future. That's why I think it's important to warn other prospective clients about their bad service. It could result not just in a bloated bill this year, but a bloated bill that follows you around forever, regardless who files your return. In addition, they charge $75 for every K-1 beyond the first, and if you have any investments there is a good chance you have shares in a publicly traded partnership. In my case the cost of the form was more than the distributions I received from the partnership. The company I eventually turned to accepted three K-1 forms without any extra charge. Lastly, they insisted on payment even though I didn't use the return they produced and they gave me bad, misleading advice. They have this weird system of "engagement letters" which later they'll hang over your head as a contract. Whether it is or not, I have no idea. I figure, you pay for a service if it's delivered as expected, not if you find out you are deliberately overcharged and don't use the return they produced at all. I think my experience speaks for itself. I think it's important for others to know how I was treated so they know what they can expect from Taxes for Expats.

United Kingdom | 10 May 2023I used TFX for the first time this year to help me file my wife’s US returns. This was quite complex and TFX were very good indeed. Their software is outstanding and the consultant they provided (Elena) could not have been more helpful. She responded to all my queries within hours and provided excellent advice. I would certainly recommend this company if you are an expat who needs to file US tax returns.
