New Zealand | 24 February 2023After convincing myself I had made a massive mistake after reading the negative reviews, we arrived in Christchurch with very low expectations. We were met with a really friendly, helpful team at the counter. They honestly couldn't be more helpful. Now about the van. We got a "lucky rover". Yes it is an ex-jucy and has done over 400,000kms. But it drove perfectly and was in pretty good overall condition, i could not fault it, everything worked. It was well set out and comfortable. We had a minor electrical issue with the fridge, But after a few friendly taps with my palm above the switch panel, everything corrected itself and we didn't have any more issues for the second week of the trip. It liked the fuel in windy conditions and in hilly areas and above 90kmh, but it sat on 100kmh and above just fine and passing other cars was fine with a little planning. Real steep hills certainly slowed the little 4 cylinder down, but that's to be expected. It's a high roofed camper, not a race car. Thank you so much lucky rentals, it was an excellent experience.

United Kingdom | 27 January 2023Here are the main issues we faced with Lucky’s vans over a 3 week trip to north island in January 2023 (we stopped keeping a list of all the minor things and dirt in the end): - total engine blow up due to coolant issue and tow / van swap required - headlights failed - wipers failed (on a rainy day) - central locking failed and keys only worked on some doors - deafening noise at all times - painfully slow up hills - leaked a lot in the rain, including around all the main electrics - insect mesh had huge hole in it They bought out the company called Happy that we originally booked with and inherited all their junk stock. But that’s still no excuse to send people out onto the road in unsafe vehicles and compromising their and other road users’ safety as well as their enjoyment on the trip. The rental period cost thousands of dollars, it’s not cheap. And we uncovered much of the vans’ recent service history when getting them fixed along the way - the previous users had all complained about the same issues so clearly Lucky aren’t doing enough to fix them and are aware of the problems. I thought about a second star because add that their head office team and roadside assist team were helpful, professional and easy to deal with, and we did get a partial refund for the days lost. I hope they were sincere when they told us they are selling the Happy vans! Hopefully we won’t notice any on the road next time we visit New Zealand…

Denmark | 25 January 2023Don’t use this company. we Got a completely trashed car. The brake lights had fallen off, the fridge didn’t work, the engine was extremely noisy, windows in the front wouldn’t open and It was simply disgusting on the inside. To get it fixed we would have to use a day at a mechanic

A fuir !

Netherlands | 30 April 2020The campervan which we hired was very old and the kitchen stuff was not clean. The campervan had no blue cart (self contained cart) at the front of the window so we almost get a fine twice. We've called Lucky Rentals for more then 10 times but the didn't help us out with it. Really bad service.

New Zealand | 25 March 2020Where do I start? Worst customer experience in ANY field, not just rentals, I have had. - Meant to pick up our campervan at 8am, wasn’t ready until 4pm (previous customer was still using until 12pm, then central locking needed fixing- which then didn’t work for the whole trip). - Terrible customer service, staff ignoring us when we came back to pick up the van, not shown around and if my partner hadn’t checked the cooker (it wasn’t working and needed replacing) we would’ve left with no way to cook. - Van was dirty and extremely old (570k’s!). Sticker on the inside of the windscreen tells you you’re liable if you overheat the engine and to stop every two hours. This happened to us driving much less and taking care of the vehicle. - We advised Lucky from the very start we would be returning the van outside of office hours due to an early flight. When we arrived the gates were locked and the key drop was on the inside of a barbed wire fence. Ended up leaving the vehicle outside and were later told you are not allowed to drop vans off outside of hours!! - $2500 bond is held for THIRTY days on your card. Whilst this is in the T&C’s it is a ridiculously long time. When you ask about this you are immediately referred to your bank. - To top it all off we had to pay an extra $160 when we returned the van because it was diesel (never mentioned to us at any stage prior). What a great way to finish the trip! Would go nowhere near this company again and would not advise anyone to rent a vehicle from them.

Australia | 04 March 2020This is a review for Lucky Rentals Christchurch. I am making the effort to post this detailed review in the hope that helps others make an informed decision. Don't believe the 9.8/10 review rating on VIP Cars. (They offer you US$25 to remove negative reviews so that's one possible reason you don't see them.) However, one's safety is more important than a cheap rental and a US$ incentive. We rented an 8-seater car from Lucky Rentals and informed them 6+ months in advance of our travel/arrival time. The car was not ready when we arrived, we got the keys almost 2 hours after the appointed time. The staff were most unapologetic, ducking behind the one-way glass in the office and avoiding me each time they saw me approach the counter to enquire about the status. When we got the car, it was filthy inside and out. The sliding doors wouldn’t open, the mechanic was called in and it took another 10+ minutes to get them to work. Once on the road, we noticed the left-hand sliding door wouldn’t shut completely so there was a constant draft coming in. We had to sit away from the door just in case it swung open. To open each time, we had to yank the doors from the outside a few times before they would open. They made a grating sound when opening/closing. The air-conditioning was inefficient. The seats had little cushioning, the driver’s seat was ripped and so uncomfortable. This is a big deal when you’re driving 6 +hrs to anywhere. The car had done over 250,000 kms and was completely un-roadworthy, hazardous even! Halfway through our trip, the power steering on the wheel died making it impossible to steer or drive the car on New Zealand’s winding roads. We would have had an accident or caused one had we continued. We called Lucky and their Customer Service was SHOCKING. I wish I could relate the bizarre conversation in its entirety but suffice it to say, they were glib, showed no understanding of the predicament we found ourselves in thanks to this beat up car (despite the fact that we purchased additional insurance), they were great with excuses but not so with any effort to source another replacement car, they just didn’t seem to care that they left seven people stranded. The earliest they offered to help was 2-4 days hence which just doesn't work when you have onward travel & pre-bookings. They were unconcerned. After much to and fro-ing and only after I threatened to stop the credit card payment for the rental, the best they would do is offer a refund for the unused portion of our rental. We wasted a full day having to deal with them and then trying to find 2 cars to rent in Queenstown (in peak season)! We were so fortunate to be able to source two cars from Budget Rentals given the busy season and short notice. (what a difference with Budget's service and rental, five stars for them!). Our ‘Lucky’ (sic) experience was with an 8-seater Toyota Estima (DSQ 396) was awful. I can’t speak for their other cars, but I can speak to the lack of care and good service at this place. If you after an UN-Lucky experience, give them a try, they won’t disappoint!

New Zealand | 28 February 2020Lucky rentals were terrible. On arrival the car was much older than described and only had a month left on the warrant. They tried to overcharge me by over $100 and then when I received a speeding fine( which is my fault) they then charged me a $50 “admin” fee for the fine. Do not use this company. Terrible quality cars and try and take their customers money at ever opportunity . Not a good company.

Japan | 25 February 2020This company is full of frauds. They deliberately changed my rental document and then charged a parking violation fee which was not my car's. It is the worst experience in my life. what a horrible company. No body should use it if you want a happy trip in NZ

New Zealand | 20 February 2020This is the most unprofessional car rental company I have ever worked with. It all started when I wanted to pick up the car. The car was supposed to be ready at 11am and I got the keys at 2pm. Later, I had an issue with a flat battery on the road and called the road assistance. They told me that I was only responsible for the payment if there was no technical issue. The mechanic that came to see my car said that it was an old battery and things like that could happen but there was no evidence that it was my fault. To my surprise, the road assistance charged me NZD 120 (for kickstarting the battery btw). I talked to the road assistance and lucky rental but there was no agreement possible. Without further evidence they claimed that there was nothing wrong with the car, despite the fact that the mechanic said something else. I continuously asked to contact the mechanic himself but they refused. Instead, they wanted me to go to another garage and get the battery tested. Furthermore, I had to deal with false accusations. My words were twisted and turned. Eventually, they just hung up and told me to "get my a*s to the car". Lucky rental car showed a tremendously inaccurate approach.

Australia | 06 February 2020There are a lot of negative reviews going around the internet for this company but we had no such negative experience hiring with them. We were looking to hire a camper in winter and Lucky were by far the cheapest option for us and their campers had all the amenities we wanted for our road trip so we decided to take a risk after reading all of the negative reviews. Perhaps we got "lucky" but our experience turned out fine. Condition of the camper was fine, drove reliably and had no issues road tripping around the south island for two weeks, we even drove up some questionable roads to the ski fields and the camper managed them without skipping a beat. Check in and check out process was fine for us with minimal waiting time. Important to keep in mind that we hired with Lucky during the winter season which is the low season, so it may be contrasting to others experiences during the summer high season.

Australia | 09 July 2019*Broken bucket for washing up water *The vent was not properly secured on request and our belongs were saturated the next morning *Broken portable heater hired for $15.00 *Only 1 working headlight - couldn’t drive at night *Speedometer was out 7-10 kms (driving 43 per road sign at roadworks showing 50 on speedometer) *Leaking water every morning on front cabin floor *No hot air from air conditioning in front cabin *No water in radiator and burning smell Directed to go to Tony’s workshop in Wellington The above is a list of the things that were either not working or broken in the campervan hired from Lucky’s from 10-17 June 2019. On return of the van to Lucky’s in Auckland the office manager took her checklist to undertake her investigation for anything that might be possibly wrong and I told her once you have completed your check I’ll give you mine. This office manager even recalled our excitement on our adventure on receipt of the campervan. My friend and I took out comprehensive insurance on the van, we wouldn’t have done it any other way. We were refunded half of the van hire but not the comprehensive insurance component. However, when the office manager proceeded to let us know she was leaving Lucky’s in three weeks and that the company had numerous complaints and that the employees were paid minimum wages what do you expect. I told her it was the company’s duty of care to ensure that everything was in good and safe working condition. I am posting this review not out of anger but because out of concern for anyone who believes in safety of your vehicle and yourselves. Cheap does not mean safe.

Netherlands | 02 April 2019If you dont want to read all of the below, please take my advice: don't do business with Lucky Rentals. I have been to New Zealand multiple times and have rented on a number of occasions using my driving license from The Netherlands without a problem. At the desk they insisted that they would need a translation, which they could be able to assist me with for $60. I asked for the manager to explain this and they referred to a specification in the NZTA driving in NZ brochure. To check the facts I called the NZTA and checked my license, which was fine and didn't need a translation. Went in the office, cancelled the reservation and picked up a car at Omega Rentals, without any scam. That scam of Lucky cost me two hours of additional time with the wait, processing and transfers. All with a young family waiting all of that time. Scandalous, they ought to be called Unlucky Rentals.

Canada | 04 March 2019Very bad experience. On the day of pick up we were at 10 o'clock in the morning in the office and wanted to pick up our camper. we were told the vehicle is not ready! We asked how long it takes, statement from the staff: no idea, could be between 1-5 hours. When asked to be a bit more specific, the answer was again that they had no idea. We asked for the manager, statement from the employee: is in the break. We ask the employee how long is he in the break: statement no idea. We said ok we wait a moment and ask another employee later. We are sitting in a waiting room with about 20 other customers and asked a young woman sitting on the floor. How long she has been waiting for her camper: statement 5 hours. We asked more people and found out that all customers were waiting for their camper. Some of the customers were older than me and have to stand all the time because there was no seating for all customers. Shortly after I had spoken a bit louder to get the attention of the employees we were offered old camping chairs that were partially broken. That was too much for me after two hours then I wrote an email to the broker of the rental company and threatened that if I did not dare in the next 30min I would go at the cost of the rental company in hotel and all the costs were about one lawyer and in addition to hire another company a camper and these costs will pass to the company. After about another 15 minutes I was offered another camper, which was not ordered but fulfilled its purpose. After about 3.5 hours we had left the rental station and drove off. Before we had asked again if everything is ready to drive off this was confirmed to us. When we were about an hour on the way I had stopped because I had bad feeling that was something wrong with the car. I found that there were no bed sheets and blankets in the camper and we had to go back again which costs us half a tank charge, and it turned out that the tank was not full. The quality of the camper was ok for the price. Other providers demanded about $ 1000 more for the same camper but this is in a better condition as it turned out. The vehicles have all around the 300000km or more. The equipment is very worn and not always fully functional. There was a lot more to complain about but I am tired to write about this bad experience. For that, the vacation was beautiful on the part of the sights and nature. Anytime again to New Zealand but not more with Lucky Rentals.
