United States | 13 September 2017I found Globelink online, looking for a long-term policy that would cover me for 6 months during a Research Fellowship in the USA, and was told I could sign up even the day before leaving, which is what I usually do with travel insurance. I contentiously did a total medical check up prior to departure, and when filling out the form (the day before leaving), contacted someone in the UK regarding my pre-existing conditions as per the website requirements. I answered questions about pre-existing conditions that, I feel, were not really listened to with a qualified ear. My pre-existing conditions have been under control for over a decade. Were it a person with medical training asking these questions, they would have been able to distinguish between carrying oral/injected cortisone with me for a medical emergency and taking it in spray form as prophylaxis. Basically I feel that I was asked questions by a very courteous and patient but not medically qualified person, and would have preferred to speak with someone who could better evaluate the pre-existing exclusions that I have have been denied recourse in negotiating (despite what the website says!). Frankly, there is more chance of my breaking a leg on the ice in Chicago than having a recurrence of conditions which have been under control for over a decade. MORAL OF THE STORY, negotiate your health coverage well in advance and don't leave it to the last minute. SUGGESTION, Globelink should have a qualified medical professional ask the "pre-existing conditions" questions, AND add a 'pre-existing conditions sudden acute recurrence' option to their policy coverage, as I would happily pay more for that - now have to spend far too time and money obtaining an additional policy!!
