United Kingdom | 17 September 2019My problem with Economy Seven Energy, the cheapest option for me, is that they do not react quickly or efficiently to reviewing my monthly direct debit downwards, whilst appearing happy to up it quickly; this month's DD was not reduced although I'd been told it would be some 13 days before. My main problem is getting the substantial excess account balance returned. This has taken several months and numerous e-mails and is still not pending. They also insist on retaining a month's DD balance so that credit will always remain. My energy needs have reduced substantially but they don't accept that so I'll have to try and get regular readings submitted to prove the DD should be lower.

You have no proactive communication to remind me when to take a meter reading as you have told me you have no service for that. Even when I provide one the cost remains the same. I will be looking to leave soon.

When questioned about this practice they have not replied with any detail about how they arrive at their figures. They have said the DD can come down again and they do remain my cheapest option in the current market.

Customer service was exceptionally helpful and polite when I called. Unlike some other services you don't seem to get reminders about submitting a meter reading and so you need to be quite autonomous with this (putting a reminder on the calender, monitoring your account online etc). If you are relatively organised this will be no problem. Seems to be consistently the cheapest fuel provider in my area (I use electric only) as assessed by the Money Savings Expert website.

The prices were competitive but then they suggested customers pay more in the winter time and less in the summer. Personally this would have been a deal breaker but common sense prevailed and they reversed their decision. Now the website has a much slicker appearance while costs remain lower than most.
