I have used TFX for a number of years to great success. Their website is easy to navigate to collect all your tax information. But, the best thing is that the tax preparers understand how to best file taxes for people that live abroad, so that you take advantage of the right deductions and exemptions, but are also in compliance. I have also gone to them with problems that they made me feel better able to handle so that I could face my fears about filing my taxes. I highly recommend them to all expats / people working and living abroad.

TFX has been doing my taxes since 2015. Every year I get a different advisor, so far all have been very good. The reasons why I give 4 are: - I cannot give 4.5 stars, which would have been my preferred rating - every year I need to spend many hours filling up their tax questionnaire, even if there any not that many changes on my info, as part of the information does not get copied from one year to the next (really annoying). Sometimes I think that I could spend the time filling out the actual IRS forms and save hundreds of dollars - they are quite expensive. Also, they charge you for all the bank accounts you include in the tax questionnaire, even if they do not include then on the Form 8938 because you just have signatory authority ($10 per account). I find that very unfair. Other than that, I have never had any problems. All tax agents were very professional and nice.

I paid for a phone consult as I am facing a complex international personal income tax issue related to my imminent relocation to Italy. The fee of $250 for 30 minutes is steep, especially since I'm basically paying them to sell me on their services. Nonetheless I was willing to give this service a try as I need deep expertise to make the right decisions. Well it never even got off the ground! I have a "confirmed" appointment for 4:30 PT today, but when I called into their conference bridge I received a recording that my call is scheduled for 20:30 ET tonight. I could not get anyone from TFX on the phone to correct this, and unfortunately I am not available at 20:30 ET tonight. I've asked for my money back, and may amend this review if they respond. Honestly, if their people and systems cannot keep the scheduling of a conference call straight, I have no faith at all that they can give me competent international tax guidance. Very sad...

Working with Taxes for Expats gives me a good feeling that I am getting a thorough and accurate handling of my taxes, which as a freelancer is important to me. It takes more effort on my part to fill out the questionnaire than with another tax preparer I have used, but I also feel that Taxes for Expats is in a better position as a result to get me all the exemptions and credits that I am eligible for. One downside compared to other preparers is the cost. I wasn’t aware up front (and this is on me, not them) that I would have to pay extra for the FBAR, so it ended up costing me more in the end than I had anticipated. So, all in all, not the cheapest option for expat taxes but certainly the most thorough I have come across.
