Healthy Pets Insurance was founded in 1996 by Mark Effenberg, as Chief Executive of a pet-loving business insuring the UK's cats and dogs. Today, Healthy Pets, which was founded before Google, is an established participant in the £1 billion-plus UK pet insurance market. Well where to start? Our cat was very poorly and had to be taken to the out of hours vets as an emergency. He was treated here and kept in overnight and referred to an animal hospital for further treatment which we had to drive him to 1.25 hours away) and leave him for an assessment and ultrasound. We then picked him up the next day and began treatment. We had to pay a £500 deposit on the Sunday to the out of hours vet. Both places were excellent and emailed us (and the insurance company) their bills with a breakdown of procedures/ drugs and all costings . We then had an email from healthy pets to say they had paid both places. The out of hours was paid a small amount ( well short of the bill) and the hospital was paid almost twice the amount on the bill! We phoned the vets and they confirmed this was the case. We tried to phone to explain and the person at healthy pets would not listen to the information and said everything was correct as far as they were concerned( this was not the case!!!! ) and we could make a complaint. My husband sent a detailed email with all the information and the vets bills attached. We were then told it was going to take up to a month to investigate( how hard can it be that the insurers have paid totally the wrong amount to 2 places!!! We have just had a reply in response to ‘ the complaint’ saying our new claim for £37.50 has been declined!!!! This bears no resemblance whatsoever to our complaint and the 2 vets are waiting the response to sort out the mess with the money! It is incomprehensible that such huge mistakes have been made and we are no further forward seeing an end to this saga!!! DO NOT take out a policy with this insurer!!

My experience of purchasing insurance for my cat Bertie was very easy and the insurance covers everything I wanted for him. They had increased my insurance by 85% on last year and when queried they said they could not reduce it duty to my cat being 12 years old. I went on line to Compare dot com. Received a number of quotes giving all the known details that Healthy Pets previous had, low and behold, Healthy Pets offered the lowest quote, for insurance for the same conditions as before for less than my previous year's annual quote. So what's going on there?

Easy to take out policy, got the price from a comparison site, looks like the cover is OK, not too happy about the extra 20% on the excess, however seems standard with so many pet policies, also like so many others there are so many contarints. I wont know how good they are till a claim happens, which I hope it never does, so a review at this stage is hard. Review is given as email reminders keep been sent, so because of taht a limited review. No portal or logon like other suppliers, so not yet convinced it will be better than my previous policy apart from a cheaper cost

Great value for new customers. Excellent UK customer service centre. Only disappointment was that my renewal quote was nearly twice that of a new customer, so I had to cancel my renewal and take out a new policy
