I’m posting an up date on my review a month ago after receiving delivery of our new Artisans Naturals, which we bought to replace our much loved but well used and tired 12 year old Artisans Naturals. Our new mattresses are superb and so comfortable, we are sleeping so well! We are so happy that we took the leap to replace our old mattressess after 12 years of use and not wait any longer, as our quality of sleep and comfort has been maintained. John Ryan have just sent me an email, exactly a month to the day of delivery, to remind us to rotate once a month and then flip the next month and continue, to ensure settlement over time is even and to ensure comfort is maintained. We flipped and turned our old mattresses monthly which no doubt extended the life and comfort or our old mattresses. We were aware due to extensive research that any dual sided comfort layer pocket spring mattress no matter how expensive, well made or high end branded will need replacing after many years of use, and we were more than happy to replace our old mattresses with the same John Ryan Artisans Naturals….and we very satisfied that we did! To summarise, the after care email is a really appreciated, useful, and thoughtful and no doubt will be of use to new customers of John Ryan Artisans Naturals mattressess.

Edit: The JR Reply mentions 'lies' & 'defamation' - the classic playbook to try and discredit me & my story. Consider this: 1 I left a 5* review after a month. Why would I change review to 1* after 3yrs ? 2 If you can read this - then this review has not been successfully removed as 'lies'. 3 I have nothing to gain by writing and this is not revenge, just the truth. 4. I spent over 1000 on a bed which was fine for 1yr but has given us backache ever since. 5. John Ryan state 'not faulty' because this isn't legally a fault. "Changes in comfort are not a fault". Beware. Your bed does not legally have to last or be comfortable for years. To be fair, JR would not be in business if all their customers were unhappy. Was I just unlucky? I really wanted this to have a happy ending. This is my absolutely true story: Summary The good: 1. Comfortable for 1 yr. 2. Affordable. Looks nice. 3. Convincing website. 4. John Ryan will have Homesense inspect your bed when it settles (however it may be deemed not a problem) and will repair the mattress if it splits at the seams. 5. Customer service good for first 60 days. The bad: 1. Became lumpy & uncomfortable after 1yr - when there is no recourse. ["Changes in comfort not classed as a defect" & "settlement within normal tolerances" - John Ryan]. 2. Cheaper than vi-spring - for a good reason! 3. Stitching split after 3 years. I would not expect that in an item that cost 1000+ pounds. 4. John Ryan stick to the 'natural settlement' line and will suggest you sleep all over the mattress or you should flip it more, or, that the settlement is within tolerance, or that comfort problems are not a fault. 5. I feel sad that I was swayed by the positive reviews and ignored the negative ones. I wrongly assumed they were just unlucky. Suggest you read the negative reviews and notice how many people are talking about 'settlement' & 'soft and lumpy'. There are a number of other reviewers with the exact experience that I have had. 7. Overall, expensive for quality & regret buying. My Story Bought superking zip/link Artisan 004 in Dec 2021. I bought it reduced in the clearance section as a medium/medium. Wife felt it was too hard - so we swapped it within the 60 day limit for a medium/soft split. No-one suggested that there may be issues ahead as a result of these choices - or that a 'clearance' bed would have issues apart from some dirt. We were asked pay a 150 pound fee to swap it. Not overjoyed, but paid. Within a week we found that the swap for the soft/medium bed was a mistake. Since each side of the bed is a different level, if you lie over the join - it hurts your back. We were not told that the 2 sides would be a different level. Since we dealt online, we had no way of knowing before delivery. There was a further 150 fee to return - at which point we would be 300 down & no bed - so we decided to make the best of it and sleep one on each side. AT THIS POINT, I LEFT A 5* REVIEW - NOW DELETED because after 3 years I have changed my mind. This is why: So long as we each slept on our 'half' and didn't lie on the middle, the bed was OK for a year - but then we both began to get backache in bed. The bed seemed to be getting softer and lumpier. I flipped the mattress every day for a week, every week for a month, & every month for a year & tried to sleep everywhere on it, to help it settle evenly - but the issue is that the padding in the mattress doesn't 'spring back' well after sleeping on it. Flipping it helps. We now flip the mattress EVERY WEEK to keep it liveable. I built an 18mm ply base on joists to make it as firm as possible. I complained to John Ryan in 2023 about the uncomfortable bed & settlement and the bed was inspected - and deemed by HomeSense to be ok, because there was less than 30mm of settlement. Homesense are paid by JR, so I might question their impartiality. I refused to sign the report, since I disagree that a 2cm deep body-shaped impression in the bed after a few days is OK. Its like sleeping in a hole & is UNCOMFORTABLE. No further action - and I still had 'nightmare bed'. I have owned 2 Vi-Spring beds - a natural bed that lasted 20 years and were always comfortable. I never had to argue 'settlement' with vi-spring because lying on them didn't leave a dent like lying on this bed does! The problem seems to be the quality of the materials in the John Ryan bed. They don't 'spring back' very well. Do NOT hope (like I did) that this is similar to vi-spring. The quality is inferior. Now, after 3 yrs, the stitching has failed on one side of the mattress and the mattress has split open. I emailed JR and repeated my story, & they immediately agreed to to stitch the mattress - (it has a 10yr warranty) - but sadly would not replace it - despite the fact that my complaint is well-documented. That's predictable. I was refused help in 2023 and that is business. Wish I could afford to replace it. I wouldn't buy again.

We are absolutely delighted with our John Ryan Mattress. After 2 faulty mattress from other mattress companies we decided to pay a little more based on the reviews and excellent reputation of John Ryan. Julie went through our requirements and advised on the most suitable mattress for us. We are now 5 weeks in and have turned it over once in accordance with instructions. It is without a doubt the most comfortable mattress we have slept on. It is obviously made to a very high standard/quality. We highly recommend.

It's worth the leap of faith. Staff know their product and can answer questions intelligently and with confidence. The You Tube videos were a great help. We had never envisaged buying a bed we had not tried in person but are so pleased that we went ahead. A quality product made and delivered quickly. Our previous mattress was top quality but old and the John Ryan mattress has met our expectations in every way - including just how heavy it is when it comes to the monthly turning! Also the delivery staff deserve a mention (I don't know if they are direct employed or sub contracted). Friendly, efficient and very careful to ensure not one wall, or anything else, was marked. All in all we highly recommend this firm.

Very good customer service and contact with REAL people who wanted to ensure that you had made the correct decision with regard to the mattress chosen and it was right for you - Reliable, friendly and efficient. Comfortable and quality product. I bought the mattress after staying in holiday accommodation and trying one for a week and found it helped my hip problem so decided to buy one. Very satisfied

After purchasing a Simba and then sending it back we looked for an alternative mattress. Came across John Ryan by Design by chance. What a really great find they are! It was nice to purchase from a local company and support a British business. In the end after some great advice from them we settled on a Artisan 1500 Mattress - King Size Zip & Link, Medium. We knew it was going to be firm and its what we wanted and expected but the addition of a Woolroom mattress topper (John Ryan advice) has made it perfect. Very minor criticism - The mattress has hand holds to manoeuvre along each side but there are none at the head and foot - we think this would be a useful addition particularly on the larger mattress sizes. Overall the customer service from them was brilliant. Once they advise your mattress is ready, they ask you to contact their delivery team to arrange a convenient delivery date - do this as soon as you can as the delivery date can be a couple of weeks away as they tend to deliver to a number of addresses in a specific area. Communication from John Ryan and the delivery team was first class. Overall we found them to be excellent, loved their product and would very highly recommend and would definitely order from them again.

I purchased an Artisan Bespoke Mattress nearly seven weeks ago after I was advised by John Ryan that due to my body weight and sleeping style that an Artisan Bespoke would be an excellent choice, which was also the most comparable to a Vispring Herald Superb which I had tried in the Vispring Flagship Store in London and liked although their price is a lot more expensive that the JR Artisan Bespoke. I have to say that after putting up with a 10-year-old saggy “medium tension” Dreams mattress, the JR Bespoke mattress can as to major shock to my system not to mention my back. After the first two or three nights (sorry, I can’t really call it sleep) I was worried that after spending a fair bit of money I had made to wrong choice and the mattress tension (Firm) was far too hard for my poor back. I also need to mention that I had also paired it with a Hasena Swiss handmade solid wooden bed which also may have had a contributing effect. I then went back to the JR forum (a superb source of advice, information & feedback IMHO) and read up again on the advice that you should give it four to six weeks for your body to acclimatise to the new mattress and the new mattress to acclimatise to your body. I won’t claim that things dramatically changed for the better in the next couple of nights, but I will claim that my sleep, rest and comfort levels continuously improved over the next three of four weeks. I can honestly say that I now look forward to bedtimes in the knowledge that I will be getting a comfortable full night’s sleep & rest. I would like to give a huge thankyou to all JR Staff for all their advice, help and expertise and would recommend them to anyone looking for a top quality mattress & top notch customer service.

Super happy with the purchase. The sales assistant gave me so much guidance, and the product is exactly what we needed. The trial period gave me a lot of reassurance, not that we needed to return/exchange. The quality of the mattress is fantastic - especially given the price-point. The delivery process was personal. Packaging was easy to dispose off. Couldn't be happier - so glad that a company like this exists.

We got in touch with John Ryan by design last year after my brother and sister in-law had bought one unfortunately at the time finances wouldn't allow however this year when we could we got back in touch with Julie and she asked us the same questions to see if our needs had changed which they had and she made an alternative suggestion as to what we should buy. They were a great company to deal with before, during and after so would highly recommend.

My experience from start to finish was brilliant - the quiz on the website helped narrow down my search and Julie was able to help me make my final decision. Everyone is super informative and helpful. The mattress is amazing, more expensive than others I was looking at but 100% worth the money for quality and experience.
