Despite our initial reservations about buying a mattress on line - the whole process with JohnRyan has been flawless - and we have just turned our new mattress over for the first time after delivery! It was a sizeable investment - but I am confident we made the right choice. Very helpful video's on the website, and very helpful staff on the telephone. We compared with several other potential purchase options and types - but eventually went for the Artisan Luxury in super king ( without ziplink) . It is so comfortable and appears very well made - in England which was important to us. Order to delivery time was less than 4 weeks which was excellent in comparison to others. Communication about manufacture and then delivery was very good. Delivery is through a specific company, who are used to moving mattresses - and the guys who came to us were punctual, and very polite. All in all, a good buying experience, and after our first couple of weeks many good nights of sleep ahead !!

Super luxurious feel and so far not too hard and not too soft the perfect medium feel.

I was hesitant buying from JRD initially because it felt too good to be true, getting a V-spring like mattress for a fraction of the cost but I gave it a go due to free returns policy. I bought Artisan Bespoke 004 Mattress - King Size, Medium (£1650, V-spring with the same spec is c £3,500) in October, delivery took 3-4wks (in line with what they communicated). The delivery man was excellent, brought the mattress to my flat into my bedroom (the mattress is c. 60kg and i live on my own so couldn't be more thankful) I must say when the mattress first arrived it smelled very bad (like being in a stable) and wasn't comfortable. I was nervous that I made the wrong decision but I read reviews on here and JRD website and people said to be patient and the smell will go away eventually and the mattress will start feeling comfy around the 30 day mark. I was skeptical but the mattress literally changed around weeks 3-4. I've now had it for 3 months and I am very happy. I can still smell a bit of horse hair but I am hoping it will completely go away eventually. The mattress feels softer than the original V-spring I tried in a shop but I learnt since that if you put your mattress on a bed frame with slats it will feel a lot softer so keep that in mind if you are buying it. I probably would've gone for a medium-firm knowing this. JRD - perhaps you could consider adding questions about what bed frame people have when advising on the mattress tension at the point of purchase. Overall - very happy with my purchase and it's a genuinely great company that produces high end mattresses at cheaper price RE: JRD reply - I don't believe you're right re: the softness. I have put a piece of MDF board about a month ago and it definitely helped to make the mattress feel firmer. We recently purchased a mattress (November 2020) from John Ryan. Having navigated the complex world of mattresses - who knew - we came across John Ryan and their customers seemed very happy. After looking at the very extensive and detailed website we decided to take a leap of faith and order online, we were reassured by the 60 day policy to change the mattress and the guarantee, and although expensive we thought it would be worth it for a great night’s sleep. The customer care team were very good, and advised us on our purchase. We were recommended the Artisan Bespoke 004 but in the end ordered the Artisan 1500 as it was more affordable and we quite like a firm bed. Delivery was about 4 weeks. There was plenty of follow up information on how to care for your mattress and delivery team were well organised and on time. When the mattress arrived it was obvious that it was of very high quality and well constructed, but after a few weeks we realised that it really was a bit too firm and not giving us the amazing night’s sleep we’d hoped for. We gave it a good few weeks as recommended, but there was little improvement. Reluctantly, as we didn’t want to inconvenience the company, I contacted the customer team to let them know. They could not have been more helpful and organised a replacement quickly and with no quibbles - the Artisan Naturals was with us within 4 weeks. We have had this new mattress less than a week and it’s amazing, so cosy and comfortable. We have a new problem now - we can’t get out of bed! I waited to write this review to assess the whole process and I can truthfully say that the experience has been brilliant. If you are worried about investing in a mattress online and from this company, don’t be, it really has been a pleasure and totally worth it.

I purchased a John Ryan bed in February 2018. I have had the mattress for three years now so here is a truthful review rather than feedback after only having owned a product for a few weeks. The first thing to say is that the John Ryan website is excellent and contains some of the best written copy I have ever come across. Whoever does the words is the single biggest asset that company has. The content is phenomenal and must be responsible for 95% of their sales. I have never read better. I have had a couple of Vi-Spring beds and am a convert to spending decent money on something you spend about a third of your life on. My Vi-Spring mattress failed after about seven years, which was disappointing, so I decided to look elsewhere for a replacement. John Ryan beds are a premium product at a more competitive price. I was wary of purchasing something I had not seen ‘in the flesh’ but trusted their write ups and guarantee. The bed arrived and I was impressed at the quality of the base and headboard – really very good. Mattress looked great too, but… it just wasn’t right. I gave it a few days and it just wasn’t the right softness/firmness for me. So I gave them a call to exercise the famous 60 day guarantee. They told me to try it for a bit longer. I said I wanted to get in early as I don’t want to end up busting the 60 days and not qualifying for an exchange. They said don’t worry – we have made a note and the clock is stopped, but you really haven’t tried it for long enough – give it a bit longer just to make sure. I was concerned by this but decided to take a leap of faith and trust them. After another week I said it just wasn’t working out and guess what? They were absolutely true to their word. We discussed at length what the problem was and then selected a more appropriate mattress to put on order. It is both the construction materials as well as the firmness which determines how a bed feels. I went to a shop to try the Vi-Spring equivalent just to be sure. I continued to use the old one whilst it was being made. I spent a bit more to upgrade to a different type of mattress construction. The recommended alternative cost more, but I wasn’t forced into this and I considered the advantages and was happy to pay the extra. The bed is excellent – simply excellent. It is nothing like the Vi-Spring I tried though. The Vi was a decent premium bed and this is also a decent premium bed. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the comparisons. I opted for a 100% natural bed. It really is very very good. I have had it for three years and it continues to be a delight. It has a 10 year guarantee and should something happen on year nine and 11 months I have no doubt at all that John Ryan will honour the warranty. They are absolutely trustworthy and will do what they say. I also think it unlikely that I will encounter any problems – all elements (bed, base and headboard) are still in top condition. I spent a fair bit on this bed, but an equivalent from the high street would have been at least twice the price – closer to three times actually. It is a phenomenally comfortable and luxurious product. I wish they made pillows – they are missing a trick there. I also wish they made mattress covers which many other manufacturers do. It is very hard to find a 100% cotton mattress protector. There is no point spending thousands on a 100% natural mattress and covering it in a plastic bag. But, you can find them – I managed – but I would have preferred to buy from John Ryan. There you go. Three years in and still well happy. You have highly unlikely to have any problems with this company, but if you do they will be sorted.

One of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on, and that includes all the good hotels. I ordered an Artisan Luxury mattress with an Artisan base, and the mattress turned out to be a bit too soft for my back. I called John Ryan, they immediately recommended replacing it with Artisan Bespoke 004, and delivered the replacement within three weeks. And then something wonderful happened. I sleep all night and wake up an hour earlier, well-rested, my back and knees feel great, the blood circulation has improved. The delivery guys were lovely, too. Thank you so much!

Beware these beds are on the firmer side and are absolutely not suitable for Fibromyalgia. I had two longish conversations with staff (one of whom appeared to be the MD) before placing my order - and there are a number of articles on their website about Fibro. I have added a star for the fact that the mattresses appear to be reasonably well made. They are mostly tufted mattresses which makes them even firmer. Be warned it takes ages for the filling to bed in.

It was time for a new mattress so started looking. I was aware of only good things said about John Ryan so had a read of their website and called them for a chat. We agreed on the Artisan Bespoke but there was no way I was buying the base to go with it as let's face it a sprung base is just one big con isn't it! Nothing wrong with my divan base so why replace it? Michaela gave me all the info' I needed (with no hard sale) and off I went trying and looking into her various suggestions. Needless to say her knowledge of all things beds were superior to mine and we also bought a sprung base. We also purchased a headboard. Delivery was arranged and I felt sorry for the delivery team as not only did they have to carry a 56KG mattress up one flight of stairs but then also up another as our bedroom is in the loft. So. The important question. Is it comfortable? Hell yes! Most comfortable bed we've ever slept on. 11 out of 10. Would I recommend John Ryan? Yes. I genuinely would highly recommend them. Yes, they're not cheap, but then quality isn't. Thank you John Ryan, and a huge thanks to Michaela for being there and answering all my questions and giving advice.

Every time I spoke to someone, there was no hard sell or making it up or guess work - the absolute opposite of visiting a major high street chain. I love the website, there is so much information it makes picking the right mattess easier and it's clear that the support doesn't end the moment you pay. Great customer service - they phoned me after I placed my order to check the mattress was right for me. Then I was able to change the delivery address really easily. And it arrived quicker than expected. The mattress itself is brilliant - really good quality for very reasonable price, especially in comparison to other high street retailers. Overall, this took the stress out of what is a big purchase. I’ve told several friends already about John Ryan by Design and would happily use them again. I’ll definitely be using their mattress for a long time - it’s really comfortable and super thick.
